Introducing our tray that further enhances the world of PLY. Just as its name suggests, PLY (a reference to “lamination layers”) is a mobile phone that sports a unique form born of accumulated layering. The clue to this mobile phone is in the plywood which is composed of alternating layers of thin pieces of wood, combining material strength with surface beauty. The idea of using wood as the base material for creating the PLY tray was a natural development for designer Hideo Kambara. The manufacturing of the wood tray is undertaken by the furniture brand Tendo PLY which has attracted attention from creators of various genres. In collaboration with many designers, Tendo Mokko has continued to release a stream of products that combine high design and textual warmth that many find hard to resist, and its technique has helped to give shape to iida’s highest inspiration. In addition to its soft wood texture, the new tray forms a supple and refined silhouette, one that originates through the process of bending pre-layered wood and then carving out a place for the mobile phone to rest. When set on the tray, the PLY mobile phone assumes an affinity with the tray, almost as though the two have become one.
