What does data transmission speed reduction mean?

It means the reduction of the data transmission speed (such as internet searches and video playback) to lower than usual. 

The conditions and contents may vary depending on the plan, so please check the following.

  • From September 1st, 2023, the TV Pack has been renamed to Drama-Variety Pack.
  • Please read TV Pack in the image as Drama-Variety Pack.

There are three main cases the data transmission speed reduction is applied.

  1. When the monthly data allowance is exceeded
    • Depending on the plan, the data cap (maximum amount of data you can use within a certain time) varies.
    • If you receive a notification about data transmission reduction via email or app, it means that it has been applied.
    • It will be lifted gradually from the 1st of the following month. If many customers are under data transmission speed reduction, it may take some time to lift it.
    • You can restore the transmission speed within the month by charging data.
  2. When a large amount of data is used within a certain period
    • Data transmission speed reduction rules and timing vary depending on the plan.
  3. When using services that require a large amount of data or long-time connection, such as video playback or cloud games
    • Some plans will have speed reduction under this condition.
    • Target services, such as video distribution and streaming services, will be determined based on the impact on our network.

  • Data MAX 5G is no longer accepting new applications.
  1. When the monthly data allowance is exceeded

    For this plan, there is no upper limit for using data on your smartphone within Japan.

    • The total amount of data available for tethering, data sharing, and World Data Flat is up to 30GB.
    • When exceeded, the transmission speed for tethering, data sharing and World Data Flat will be 128kbps.
  2. When a large amount of data is used within a certain period

    Data transmission speed reduction will be applied during peak hours.

  3. When using services that require a large amount of data or long-time connection, such as video playback or cloud games

    Data transmission speed reduction will be applied during network congestion.

Unlimited MAX 5G DAZN pack/Unlimited MAX 5G Netflix pack (P)/Unlimited MAX 5G with Amazon

  • Data MAX 5G Netflix pack is no longer accepting new applications.
  1. When the monthly data allowance is exceeded

    For this plan, there is no upper limit for using data on your smartphone within Japan.

    • The total amount of data available for tethering, data sharing, and World Data Flat is up to 60GB.
    • When exceeded, the transmission speed for tethering, data sharing and World Data Flat will be 128kbps.
  2. When a large amount of data is used within a certain period

    Data transmission speed reduction will be applied during peak hours.

  3. When using services that require a large amount of data or long-time connection, such as video playback or cloud games

Unlimited MAX 5G Drama-Variety Pack/Data MAX 5G Drama-Variety Pack

  • Data MAX 5G Drama-Variety Pack is no longer accepting new applications.

    For this plan, there is no upper limit for using data on your smartphone within Japan.

    • The total amount of data available for tethering, data sharing, and World Data Flat is up to 70GB.

    For this plan, there is no upper limit for using data on your smartphone within Japan.

Pitatto Plan 5G

  • Pitatto Plan 5G is no longer accepting new applications.
  1. When the monthly data allowance (7GB) is exceeded

    The transmission speed for sending and receiving will be up to 128kbps until the end of the month.

  2. When a large amount of data is used within a certain period

    Data transmission speed reduction will be applied during peak hours.

Smartphone Mini Plan 5G

  1. When the monthly data allowance (4GB) is exceeded

    The transmission speed for sending and receiving will be up to 300 kbps until the end of the month.

    • From the start of the service, the speed will be 128kbps. From April 2023, it is being gradually changed to a maximum of 300kbps.
  2. When a large amount of data is used within a certain period

    Data transmission speed reduction will be applied during peak hours.

Smartphone Start Plan 5G

  1. When the monthly data allowance (20GB) is exceeded

    The transmission speed for sending and receiving will be up to 128kbps until the end of the month.

  2. When a large amount of data is used within a certain period

    Data transmission speed reduction will be applied during peak hours.

Smartphone Start Plan Light 5G

  1. When the monthly data allowance (4GB) is exceeded

    The transmission speed for sending and receiving will be up to 128kbps until the end of the month.

  2. When a large amount of data is used within a certain period

    Data transmission speed reduction will be applied during peak hours.

Smartphone Start Plan (S) 5G/Smartphone Start Plan (Flat) 5G

  • Smartphone Start Plan (Flat) 5G and Smartphone Start Plan (S) 5G are no longer accepting new applications.
  1. When the monthly data allowance (3GB) is exceeded

    (5GB Smartphone Start Plan (S) 5G with the “2GB Increase Option” currently applied)

    (5G Smartphone Start Plan (Flat) 5G with the “U22 Data Increase Campaign” currently applied)

    The transmission speed for sending and receiving will be up to 128kbps until the end of the month.

  2. When a large amount of data is used within a certain period

    Data transmission speed reduction will be applied during peak hours.

Plans for 4G LTE devices

Unlimited MAX 4G/Data MAX 4G LTE/au Data MAX Plan Pro

  • The Data MAX 4G LTE and au Data MAX Plan Pro are no longer accepting new applications.
  1. When the monthly data allowance is exceeded

    For this plan, there is no upper limit for using data on your smartphone within Japan.

    • The total amount of data available for tethering, data sharing, and World Data Flat is up to 30GB.
    • When exceeded, the transmission speed for tethering, data sharing and World Data Flat will be 128kbps.

  2. When a large amount of data is used within a certain period

    Data transmission speed reduction will be applied during peak hours.

au Pitatto Plan

  • Pitatto Plan is no longer accepting new applications.
  1. In cases where monthly data allowance (20GB) is exceeded

    The transmission speed for sending and receiving will be up to 128kbps until the end of the month.

  2. If you have used 6GB or more of data in the last 3 days (not including the current day)

    Data transmission speed reduction will apply all day long.

Smartphone Mini Plan 4G

  1. When the monthly data allowance (4GB) is exceeded

    The transmission speed for sending and receiving will be up to 128kbps until the end of the month.

    • At the time of service start,, the maximum speed will be of 128kbps. From April 2023, it is being gradually changing to a maximum of 300kbps.
  2. When a large amount of data is used within a certain period

Smartphone Start Plan 4G

Smartphone Start Plan (S) 4G & Smartphone Start Plan (Flat) 4G

    The transmission speed for sending and receiving will be up to 300 kbps until the end of the month.

  2. When a large amount of data is used within a certain period

    Data transmission speed reduction will be applied during peak hours.

au Flat Plan 20N/au Flat Plan 25 Netflix Pack N/au Flat Plan 20/au Flat Plan 25 Netflix Pack

  • au Flat Plan 20N, au Flat Plan 25 Netflix Pack N, au Flat Plan 20, and au Flat Plan 25 Netflix Pack are no longer accepting new applications.
  1. When the monthly data allowance (20GB/25GB) is exceeded

    The transmission speed for sending and receiving will be up to 128kbps until the end of the month.

  2. If you have used 6GB or more of data in the last 3 days (not including the current day)

    Data transmission speed reduction will apply all day long.

au Data MAX Plan

  • au Data MAX Plan is no longer accepting new applications.
  1. When the monthly data allowance is exceeded

    For this plan, there is no upper limit for using data on your smartphone within Japan.

    • The total amount of data available for tethering, data sharing, and World Data Flat is up to 20GB.
    • When exceeded, the transmission speed for tethering, data sharing and World Data Flat will be 128kbps.
  2. When a large amount of data is used within a certain period

    Data transmission speed reduction will be applied during peak hours.

  3. When using services that require a large amount of data or long-time connection, such as video playback or cloud games

    • When exceeded, the transmission speed for tethering, data sharing and World Data Flat will be 128kbps.
  2. When a large amount of data is used within a certain period

    Data transmission speed reduction will be applied during peak hours.

  3. When using services that require a large amount of data or long-time connection, such as video playback or cloud games

For plans other than the above

  1. When the monthly data allowance (varies by rate plan) is exceeded

    The transmission speed for sending and receiving will be up to 128kbps until the end of the month.
