(Service area)

I am sure that I am in a GSM service area, but I am unable to use the service. |

Even within covered cities and service area locations, there may be instances in which you are unable to use the service due to geographical or locational factors.

(Insertion of au IC-Card)

How do I remove and insert the au IC-Card? |

First, turn off the au IC-Card-compatible phone and remove the au IC-Card. Next, turn off the GSM mobile phone and, following the instructions in the manual, insert the au IC-Card.

(Unlocking PIN)

While overseas, I accidentally entered a wrong PIN1 code and the phone became locked. What should I do? |

If you have repeatedly entered the wrong PIN1 code and the au IC-Card has become locked, you can enter the unlock code (PUK) printed on the back side of the plastic card in which the au IC-Card was mounted. The phone will be unlocked after entering this code, but you will then be asked to set a new PIN1 code, so your PIN1 code must be changed.

(Welcome message)

When I turned on my GSM phone at my destination, I received a short message in English (or a local language) from an unknown sender. I would like to use the service written in the message because I understand the content of it. Is this all right? |

In some cases, depending on your destination country and the carrier, you may receive a short message (free of charge) that, for example, welcomes you to the service. If this message contains a phone number or other information, you may incur very high calling charges for calling the number, so we recommend that you do not use such information.

When I turned on my GSM phone at my destination, I received a short message in English (or a local language) from an unknown sender. I have my phone set in Japan so that I cannot receive unwanted C-Mail. Can au make settings so that I do not receive these messages? |

We apologize, but these messages are delivered by the local carrier and cannot be controlled by au.

(Additional functions)

What additional services are available? |

| (1) |
Among call forwarding services, the Call Forwarding Service (Unconditional Transfer) is available. Please see the manual of your GSM phone for operation of the Call Forwarding Service (Unconditional Transfer). However, the Automatic Answering, Voice Mail and other call forwarding services as well as the Call Waiting and Three-way Calling (requiring an optional contract) services are not available.
| (2) |
The User Guide lists the Call Waiting and Three-way Calling services as being available in some destination countries; however, these services are not available regardless of the destination.

How do I set the Call Forwarding Service (Unconditional Transfer) ? |

Please check the instruction manual for setting methods.

| * |
Please note that the number (type) you enter is the same as you would enter if setting Call Forwarding while you are in Japan. For example, if forwarding to a number in Japan with a 03 area code, enter (ex.) 03-1111-2222; if forwarding to a number within the U.S., enter 001 (the 001 international code) + 010 (MYLINE) + 1 (U.S. country code) + the destination number. Also, when forwarding calls to phones in countries other than Japan, you have to register in advance to use international dialing with 001 or other international codes. Please note that the au international service (005345) is not available for call forwarding to other countries.

I would really like to hear the messages in Automatic Answering or Voice Mail that were recorded before I left the country. What should I do? |

Messages can only be retrieved with the remote operation dialing service (+81-90-4444-0141; incurs international calling charges to Japan).

Can I make emergency calls? |

Yes, you can.

What are the calling charges for the Call Forwarding Service (Unconditional Transfer) ? |

Call Forwarding Service can be suspended free of charge if this operation is made through the mobile phone menu or dialing **21 or ##21 (however, switching service on or off with remote operation and dialing 81-90-4444-1424 incurs a charge).
Calls actually forwarded are charged the same rate as if you were in Japan and are therefore charged the standard rate from Japan to wherever the call is forwarded to.

(Other functions)

Can I use the memory data (address books, etc.) that I have recorded onto the au IC-Card using a GSM phone with an au WIN handset (display, editing, erasing, etc.) ? |

The data you have recorded onto an au IC-Card cannot be operated (display, editing, erasing, etc.) with an au WIN model. Memory that is recorded using a GSM phone is not supported by au.

(Overseas GSM network)

While using the service abroad, I have been unable to make or receive calls, use services, or connect to certain numbers. Are there differences in how the phone operates abroad and in Japan? |

Because international roaming is a service provided using the networks of overseas carriers, due to their circumstances, there may be cases in which you cannot make or receive calls, use services, or connect to certain numbers.

(Network guidance)

Can I change the network guidance heard when service is unavailable to Japanese? |

The network guidance in your destination country is provided by the overseas carriers, so it cannot be changed to Japanese or set by au.

(Notification of caller's number)

When I receive calls, the caller's number is not displayed. Can I set my phone to display the caller's number? |

At your travel destination, as a rule caller ID will not be displayed.

(Display of carrier name abbreviations)

When I turn on my GSM phone abroad, it searches for a signal from GSM providers, and then displays the abbreviation of a company name. Do calling charges differ among GSM providers? |

The abbreviation displayed on your phone indicates that it is using that GSM provider's network. However, calling charges are the same even if multiple carriers exist within one country.

If I am using the phone in a country or region in which multiple carriers are available, is there a way I can check which carrier I'm using? |

Depending on the GSM phone's manufacturer and model, abbreviations may differ, or the carrier's name may not be displayed, so this information is not provided on the au website.

(Toll-free calls, etc.)

Are collect calling, toll-free calling, credit calling, or prepaid calling available with calling methods overseas? |

These services may be available for roaming users depending on the country and carrier. However, because you are using the phone circuits of your destination country when using these calling methods, domestic calling charges within that country will be incurred.

(Upon return to Japan)

After I return to Japan, will I have to do anything to switch the card back to domestic mode? |

No, this is not necessary. You can use the au IC-Card within Japan just by inserting it into a compatible handset.
